Jerome ‘Jerry’ Seidel Sr.

Jerome B. “Jerry” Seidel Sr., 72, Washington, died at 8:36 p.m. Friday at Daviess Community Hospital.

He was born Dec. 21, 1934, in Washington to the late John and Julia (Cullivan) Seidel. He was a 1953 graduate of Washington Catholic High School, where he was a four-year starter on the basketball team and was the first player to use the jump shot, and attended Vincennes University. He was an avid Washington Catholic basketball fan. He also played Santa for WC for several years.

He served in the U.S. Army, where he was a tank commander in the third Armored Division. He was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church, Washington Knights of Columbus and Washington American Legion. He had retired from ResCar after 45 years of working in the railroad industry.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn (Tolliver) Seidel, whom he married Aug. 10, 1962; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Jane Seidel and Patrick Seidel, all of Washington; and Jerome B. Jr. and Lorna Seidel of Jasper; two daughters and son-in-law, Sonya Morley of Fort Wayne and Angela and Jack Ashby of Washington; brother, Carl Seidel of Washington; 14 grandchildren, Robert Davis, Dylan Seidel, Tyler Seidel, Katie Seidel, Madison Seidel, Brayton Ashby, Hannah Ashby, Kyle Ashby and Michael Seidel, all of Washington, Sarah Morley of Florida, Amy Casselman of Fort Wayne, Amy Seidel of Vincennes, and Julie Seidel and Jarrett Seidel, both of Jasper; and one great-granddaughter, Faith Casselman.

He is preceded in death by four brothers, five sisters, and one grandson, Aaron Morley.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Simon Catholic Church, with Rev. Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the church with a wake service at 4 p.m.
