Broderick "Brody" Beard

PETERSBURG — Broderick “Brody” Tyler Beard, 14, died Tuesday morning.

He was born April 13, 1993, in Jasper, to Eric and LeAnn Beard. A student at Pike Central, he was looking forward to beginning high school this fall. He was a diver on Pike Central’s swimming and diving team. His favorite place to be was his Aunt Amy and Uncle Chris Rudolph’s farm. It was his second home, and he loved everything about the farm, especially the time spent with his cousin, Adam Rudolph, 16.

Brody loved playing soccer, swimming, jumping on the trampoline, playing drums and wrestling with his brothers. He enjoyed spending time at Patoka Lake with his Grandma Leslie and Aunt Kayla, white-water rafting and hiking with his father Eric and uncles Steve Beard and Layne Beard. He loved riding dirt bikes with his brothers and father and hanging out with friends.

Monday, Aug. 6, was a very special day for Brody and friends, Michael Lee, 16, and John Hughes, 17. The boys went to the beach to show off their swimming and diving skills for Brody’s nephew, 2-year-old Gavin Pancake. The boys were all in high spirits — they were so excited about going to the Van’s Warped Tour Concert in Noblesville, Ind., the next day. Brody, John and Jesse Houston, 17, spent the night with Michael, planning to leave early for the concert on Tuesday. On the way to the concert, they were involved in a car accident which was fatal for Brody, John and Michael. Jesse survived the crash, but sustained grave injuries.

Surviving Brody are his mother, LeAnn (Brown) Beard; brothers Jacob Pancake and Nathan Hook, all of Petersburg; grandparents Michael and Cynthia Brown of Washington; Larry and Leslie Beard of Petersburg; and his great-grandparents, Billie Jean Beard and Marcia Thomas, Robert and Wanda Brown, all of Petersburg; Leroy and Helen Meyer of Boonville. Also surviving are aunts and uncles Kayla and Steve Beard, Amy and Chris Rudolph, LuAnn and Pat Gordon, J.D. and Karen Hamm, Rick and Sonya Grams, Katrina Fulcher, Mike and Lorraine Deffendoll and Mike and Susan Gibson; nephew Gavin Pancake and several cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eric Beard, who died May 1, 2005, and his uncle Layne Beard.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Harris Funeral Home, at Seventh and Walnut streets in Petersburg, with Pastors Steve Frederick and Roy Selby officiating. Following the service, burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit the family today from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
