---- — ELNORA — William M. “Bill” Slatton, 80, passed away Tuesday at Ketcham Memorial Center. He was born June 16, 1933, to the late Ralph and Florence (Miller) Slatton in Daviess County. On May 22, 1964, Bill was married to Marilyn (Mallett) Slatton and she survives.

Bill graduated from Plainville High School in 1951. He then served in the U.S. Army for two years. He later graduated in 1960 with a B.S. degree from Oakland City College where he played both basketball and baseball. He then received his M.S. degree from Indiana State University. Bill then began his 33-year teaching and coaching career at Elnora High School.

Bill was active in Army base baseball teams during his service time and also played several years for the Washington Grays semi-pro baseball team. In 1968 Bill become the first basketball coach at North Daviess High School, where he proudly served the youth of the North Daviess Community until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Parkview Christian Church where he served as trustee.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Marilyn Slatton; brothers-in-law, Bud Mallett (Martha) of Plainville, Ralph Bechtel of Plainville; nieces, Darla Jo Trueblood of Plainville, Susan Myers (Jeff) of Washington; nephews, Craig Bechtel of Jasper, Rick Bechtel (Cindy) of Edinburgh, David Mallett (Angie) of Plainville.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Felba Bechtel.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gill Funeral Home, 308 E. Walnut St., Washington, IN. A second visitation will be held on Monday, from noon to 2 p.m. at Parkview Christian Church, 12 Second St., Plainville, with a funeral service immediately following. Officiating will be Bro. Alfred Helms and David Deal. Burial will be in Plainville Cemetery.
