ODON — George W. Cates, 91, died at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Nursing Center.
Born May 4, 1922, in Ludiamond, Ky., he was the son of Henry and Daisy (Day) Cates.
A U.S. Army veteran, he had been a telephone worker at TDS for 30 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Regina J. Cates of Jasper, and Mary Lou (Robert) Baldwin of Columbus; a stepdaughter, Sue (John) Myers of Odon; a stepson, Robert (Pat) Woodsmall of Kentucky; grandchildren, Shawn Cates and Kris Rice, both of Washington, Joshua (Amber) Cates of Linton, Stacey (Todd) Harry of Columbus, and Dana Bissey of Indianapolis; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a beloved sister, Mary Dillinger of Washington; three special nieces and nephews, Michael Cornett, Dale Cornett and Denise Justice; and several other relatives.
His first wife, Claudia Pauline Hamilton died Feb. 9, 1965.
His second wife, Margarette Harris died Feb. 21, 2001.
One great-grandchild, Patrick Scott Andrews, is also deceased.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Poindexter-McClure Funeral Home, Odon Chapel, with Rev. Nick Moore officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, with military graveside rites.
Visitation is after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
