Esther Purdue

Esther L. Purdue, 92, of Washington, died at 7:10 a.m. Thursday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.

Born May 18, 1921, in Washington, she was the daughter of Orlie and Mablie (McCoy) Mathis.

She attended Washington High School and was a saleswoman for Avon for 25 years. A previous member of Assembly of God Church, she loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Lona (Fred) Wade of Washington; a son, Jimmy Lee Purdue; three grandchildren, Fred Wade, Sherry (Paul) Giese, and Jodi Purdue; two great-grandchildren, Melissa (Will) Hargis, and Justin O’Connor; one great-great-grandchild, Audrina Jo Hargis; and one sister, Margie McGill of Ohio.

Her husband, James S. Purdue, whom she married Oct. 8, 1938, died in 1988.

Her parents; one brother, Charlie Mathis; and three sisters, Dot Woody, Judy Mullinx and Carol Lents, are also deceased.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gill Funeral Home, with Rev. Brad Rainey officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Visitation is from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
