Betty Ruth (Burch) Williams, 91, formerly of S.E. Sixth Street, was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Bogard Township to Fred and Ruth (Smiley) Burch.

She grew up on a horse farm near Epsom, where her father raised Percheron horses. Following graduation from Washington High School, she attended nurse’s training at Union Hospital in Terre Haute and became a registered nurse. Betty was initially a surgical nurse who worked at various hospitals throughout her nursing career due to her travels with her husband Paul at multiple duty stations, including two tours in Japan, Alaska prior to statehood, California, Kentucky and New York. She opened and supervised recovery rooms at Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, N.Y., and Daviess County Hospital. She retired from the Daviess County Hospital as infection control coordinator in 1984, having worked there for more than 30 years. She was a member of the American Nurses Assn., District 18 Nurses Assn., was an American Red Cross nurse, member of the American Legion Auxiliary, 1st Armored Division Assn. Auxiliary, Indiana University Alumni Assn. and the Union Hospital Alumni Assn.

She met Paul S. Williams after his service in Northern Africa and Anzio, Italy. They were married Feb. 14, 1945 (Valentine’s Day). Betty and Paul moved from Washington to Lawrence, Kan., in 1997 to be near Fred, Linda and Chris. Then she followed Fred and Linda to Arizona in 2006.

They had one child, Fredrick B. Williams, who was also born in Washington, and his wife Linda.

Betty is also survived by one grandchild, Christopher A. Williams, who practices antitrust and international trade law in Washington, D.C.

A visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Gill Funeral Home. A funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Brother Byron Holtsclaw officiating. Entombment will follow in Sugarland Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
