Maurice Barber

Maurice Fay Barber, 80, of Washington, passed away Wednesday. He was born May 1, 1933, in Washington, to the late Fred and Mae Bradfield Barber. Maurice was wed to Peggy Jo Edwards Barber on Oct. 19, 1956; they were just shy of 60 wonderful years together. He attended Washington High School. He served in the United States Army, was a member of Mt. Gilead Church, the Glendale Masonic Lodge, and was a former Shrine Club member.

Maurice “Blabber” Barber had a love of family, friends, food, and farming. He was most often seen sitting in his truck watching his son farm or as most people know, sitting in the recliner talking to his friends on the telephone. Maurice was known by many for his love of pulling pranks and telling jokes. He had a love for food, and a large sweet tooth, but he did not let diabetes get in the way of him enjoying his dinners and desserts. When not farming, Maurice enjoyed taking care of rabbits, rescuing dogs, or shooting birds.

Survivors include his loving wife, Peggy Jo Barber; two daughters, Kim (Patrick) Barber, Karen (Mark) Radcliff; a son, Kelly Barber; grandchildren, T.J. Wirts, Devin (Jake) Crouch, Drew Wirts, Cassidy Radcliff, Mikala Barber, Kaden Barber, Casey Summers-Smith, Kyle Mayfield, and Eric Mayfield; great-grandchildren, J.T. Wirts, Carter Crouch, Schaeffer Smith; sisters, Erma Padgett, Norma Waggner, Mary Himsel.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mae Barber; and two brothers, John and Bernard Barber.

Visitation will be held at Gill Funeral Home Saturday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., with Masonic Rites held at 1 p.m. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. also at the funeral home, with visitation there from noon until time of service.
