WASHINGTON — John J. Gordon, 86, of Washington, passed away at his 5:12 p.m. Wednesday at his residence. Born Feb. 2, 1927, in Washington, he was the son of Joseph and Lillian (Foust) Gordon. A 1945 graduate of Washington Catholic High School, he was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 and received his master’s degree in Russian. John also studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and worked at the library as a Soviet acquisitions specialist. Before returning to his home town of Washington, John was employed at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., as a Soviet exchange specialist. He was also co-owner of the Tuxedo Tavern with his brother Charles for many years. He is survived by one niece, Angie Lewandowski; and five nephews, Joe Gordon, Chris Dobyns, Joe Dobyns, Stephen Dobyns and John Dobyns. He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Stella Dobyns; and one brother, Charles Gordon. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Cemetery, with Yvonne Evans officiating. Arrangements are being made through Ed Lee Mortuary.
