The Washington Times-Herald

---- — John R. Williams, 85, of Washington and formerly of Petersburg, passed away Tuesday. John leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Belle Tevebaugh Williams, formerly of Monroe City.

They are the parents of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Williams of Etna Green, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Williams of Bedford, Va., Theresa Wolfe of Indianapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Terry Doyle (Maria) of Cupertino, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. David Buchanan (Laura) of Washington.

They are the proud grandparents of nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

John retired from Indianapolis Power and Light in 1991. He enjoyed his retirement with his family, gardening, and attending St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Petersburg.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Augustus Williams (Martha), and his brothers Glen, George, Frank, Carl, Harold and Ralph. John’s remaining siblings are his twin sister, Doris Klein, Helen Andrews and Paul Williams. They were a close family that enjoyed many fun times together dancing the jitterbug and singing with his deep baritone voice.

John was a generous man who thought of others before his own needs. He believed if he worked diligently and cared for his family the Lord would provide. He had a caring ritual of polishing his family’s Sunday shoes for church. We awoke to seven pairs of gleaming shoes in preparation for church each Sunday. It is one of the many ways he showed his love for our family.

We feel fortunate to have had his loyal friendship and guidance. We will miss the pleasure of his company but celebrate the times we were all together as we will be some day again.

In lieu of flowers a donation to St. Jude’s Hospital For Children would please John and Mary.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Gill Funeral Home, 308 E. Walnut St., Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Hope, 315 N.E. Third St., Washington, at 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery.
