Betty Werling

FORT WAYNE — Betty Jane Werling, 89, was surrounded by family when she went to be with her Maker at 8 a.m. on Oct. 11.

Born April 29, 1923, she was the daughter of Russell Edgar and Mabel Virena (Bobilya) Aker.

In 1963 she began a career in the Allen County Auditor’s office, rising to the rank of chief deputy. She later worked in the treasurer’s office as chief deputy and later as treasurer of the county. She ended her career with the county at the age of 81, working in the voter’s registration office for the last few years.

She was devoted to her children and her church. She served as a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader.

A founding member of what is now Grace Presbyterian Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, elder and trustee with the church and was the treasurer for the Women’s Association for more than 50 years.

She was a great fan of Cubs baseball and Indiana University sports, as well as any sport or for which team her grandchildren played.

She is survived by three sons, Robert Lewis and Marsha Werling of Waterford, Calif., Richard David and Carolyn Werling of New Haven and William Lynn and Jill Werling of Fort Wayne; three daughters, Patricia Louise Morrison, Carol Sue and Tim Reinking and Jane Marie Brewer, all of Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren, Heather Erin and Russell Bean of Auburn, Jennifer Evans of Garrett, David Werling of Houston, Daniel and Samantha Werling of Jacksonville, Fla., Christopher and Christa Werling of Crown Point, Ryan Morrison of Denver, and Pamela Shannon, Anthony Brewer, Ashley Brewer, Alexander Brewer, Michael Werling and Jacob Reinking, all of Fort Wayne; 13 great-grandchildren, Hayden, Jaelen, Sage, Zach, Katherine, Breanna, Gabriel, Ian, Sarah, Jackson, Alexandria, Kayah and Ethan; a sister, Phyllis Follis of Florida; a sister-in-law, Naomi Hettinger of Fort Wayne; and a brother-in-law, Nicholas Werling of Fort Wayne.

Her husband, William Lewis Werling, whom she married Jan. 3, 1944, preceded her in death Dec. 15, 1999. A grandchild, Heather Christine Morrison, died in infancy. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a son-in-law, Ronald James Morrison.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Klaehn, Fahl and Melton Funeral Home, and from 9 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at Grace Presbyterian Church.
