Jack Smith Sr.

July 21, 1931 - Oct. 24, 2013

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Jack L. Smith Sr., 82, died Thursday at Memorial Medical Center. Jack was born July 21, 1931, to Norwood and Vera (Queen) Smith in Washington. He married Marsella Cox in Princeton in 1948.

Jack worked for Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Company. After leaving the railroad company he went on to work for JC Penny in Hammond and retired in Elgin, Ill. He was a member of the Wheatland Christian Church.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom and Richard Smith; and sister, Hazel Renner.

He is survived by his wife, Marsella; children, Terrie Redden, Jack (Marsha) Smith Jr.; four granddaughters, Tammy (Ron) McDermott, Heather (Brian) Alvey, Melinda (Scott) Kennedy, Kimberly (Abram) Edgington; 10 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Violet Hoke, and his Aunt Jenny of Washington.

Cremation will be accorded by the Springfield Crematory. Memorial services will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m. at the Wheatland Christian Church, Wheatland. Reverend Brent Cramer will be officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wheatland Christian Church. Ellinger-Kunz and Park Funeral Home, 530 N. Fifth St., Springfield, IL 62702 is in charge of arrangements.
