Sister Frances Baker

ST. MARY-of-the-WOODS — Sister Frances Joan Baker died Oct. 26 at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Washington on Feb. 23, 1916, to Frederick and Frances Rankel Baker and was given the name Rosemary.

Rosemary entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence Jan. 27, 1932. In her 81 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister Frances Joan ministered as teacher for 52 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts and North Carolina. She taught fourth grade at St. Simon School in Washington from 1968 to 1974. In 1986 she retired to the SP mother house at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods where she gave volunteer service to the preschool and to her sisters. Beginning in 2009 she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer.

Sister Frances Joan was a gracious woman with a prayerful, peaceful spirit. She shared this inner peace with those she met. When she retired she accepted an assignment to pray in the Blessed Sacrament Adoration Chapel on Saturday mornings. She kept this commitment for 27 years, right up until her death.

Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by five brothers, Louis, Fred, Carl, Leo and Bill Baker; one sister, Fannie Clark; one half-sister, Henrietta Brown; and two half-brothers, Peter and George Braun. The Mass of Christian Burial was Oct. 31 at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods with burial in the Sisters of Providence cemetery.
