Wilbur Ault

Sept. 13, 1915 - Nov. 6, 2013

TERRE HAUTE — Wilbur Leon Ault, 98, passed away Wednesday after a brief illness requiring a hospital stay and transfer to Davis Gardens Continuing Care Center in Terre Haute. He was born Sept.13, 1915, in Greene County east of Newberry, the son of Fredrick and Ellen (Reed) Ault.

In 1933 he graduated from Newberry High School. He married Versie Jolliff on Jan. 18, 1942. He served in the United States Army. During World War II he was in the European Theatre in General George Patton’s 4th Armored Division.

He retired from Crane Naval Ammunition Depot (now known as NSWC), having worked there over 30 years. During retirement years, Wilbur and Versie moved from the Elnora vicinity to Terre Haute. They celebrated their 70th anniversary in Jan. 2012. Versie preceded him in death on Aug. 10, 2012.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Harold Wessel of Greensburg; four grandchildren, Allen (Stacy) Wessel, Andrea (Vi-En) Choong, Sara (Chris) Hengel, and Tonya Wessel; five great-grandchildren, AJ and Adelaide Wessel and Cameron, Kailee and Tristan Choong; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Versie, he was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Emil (Lillian) Ault, Hilbert (Eula) Ault, Raymond (Dorothy) Ault, Luther (Dorothy) Ault, Victor (Nova) Ault, and Ralph (Dorothy) Ault; and two sisters, Mina Ault and Helen Ault.

Wilbur was a member of Breden Memorial United Methodist Church in Terre Haute, and formerly a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church east of Newberry. He also held membership in various associations and fraternal organizations, including the Masonic Lodge.

A remembrance service for the life of Wilbur L. Ault will be held at DeBaun Funeral Homes, 85 E. Springhill Drive in Terre Haute, at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, with Pastor David Deal officiating and Pastor Greg Puttmann assisting. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made either to Breden Memorial United Methodist Church or to the donor’s favorite charity.
