Donald Walter “Zero” Whalen, 75, of Washington, died at 5:55 p.m. Friday at Prairie Village.
Born Aug. 7, 1938, in Washington, he was the son of Herbert J. and Opal B. (Decker) Whalen.
A graduate of Washington High School, he was a retired laborer and had worked at McCord’s and was a self-employed landscaper. He was an avid outdoorsman, loved to fish and hunt mushrooms and tell jokes. He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a member of New Hope Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean (Rone) Whalen, whom he married Aug. 22, 1964; three children, Vickie (Brian) Sherman of Washington, Todd (Leah) Whalen of North Carolina, and Sheila Whalen of Washington; four grandchildren, Amber Cook, Abbi Sherman, Brock and Holly Whalen; and one great-grandchild, Claire Cook.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marylin Woodruff and Eleanor Hobson; and a brother, Charles Robert.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gill Funeral Home, with Joe Coquillard and Doug Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Sugarland Memory Gardens.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
