---- — BLOOMINGTON — Janice Kathleen “Kathy” Snyder-Root, 67, died peacefully Sunday at 9:02 p.m. following a short illness at Monroe Hospital in Bloomington. Known as “Kathy” or “Kate” to her many friends and family, she was born to John K. and Stella Mae Snyder in Indianapolis on Feb. 3, 1947. A 1965 graduate of Washington High School, Kathy attended Indiana University and subsequently earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Indiana State University. She taught elementary school art in multiple schools as an art supervisor for the Washington Community School System for more than a decade before working in the Indiana Department of Education in Indianapolis. She then moved to Pasadena, Calif., where she worked in public relations for the Ambassador Foundation, and where she also met her late husband, Victor Root.

Following her marriage, Kate and Victor lived and worked in San Diego before moving to Bloomington in the late 1990s. Their Bloomington home reflected Kathy’s great and long-time love of organic gardening with multiple trellis and tiers of blooming annuals and perennials. The walls of her home depicted her talent and love of art, with many acrylic paints and original pottery. An avid reader, she enjoyed both ageless classics and fiction, particularly the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, often together with a cup of herb tea, of which she was an aficionado. She greatly enjoyed being closer and able to take part in the reunion of high school friends in Washington.

A beloved daughter, sister, aunt, mother, and grandmother, Kathy and her late husband first created and organized a now-cherished tradition of annual Snyder family reunions, drawing together multiple family members and friends from across numerous generations and states. Following the untimely death of her best friend and husband, she and friends helped establish the Victor Root New Direction Scholarship Fund at Ivy Tech College in Bloomington, which was funded in major part by contributions from a lively family auction of family memorabilia and original art at the annual reunion.

Kathy is survived by her father John K. Snyder Sr; son Blair Jones of Newburgh; stepdaughter Katrina Madero (Australia), stepson Robert Root (Australia); grandchildren Alexa Jones and Wyatt Jones; brother-in-law Gregory Thomas Root (Switzerland); brothers John K. Snyder Jr. (Linda) of Jasper; Michael Snyder (Jamie) of Indianapolis; Randy Snyder (Berniece) of Bloomington; sisters Kittie Masters (Chad) of Fortville, and Felicia Snyder of Lexington, Ky.; nieces Dorothy Snyder, Dee Ann Ramsey (Mike), Lovie Snyder, Sarah Snyder, Cadence Masters; nephews John K. Snyder III, Jim (Fana) Snyder, Winston Snyder, Chase Masters; aunt Moni Snyder of Indianapolis; and numerous other great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins and other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Stella Mae Snyder, and her husband, Thomas Victor Root.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Washington, where the ashes of Kathy will be interred with the ashes of Victor next to her mother Stella.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Victor Root New Direction Scholarship Fund at Ivy Tech (Bloomington) or the Brown County Library in Nashville (Indiana).
