LOOGOOTEE — Alice Matthews, 82, died at 3:33 a.m. Wednesday at her home with her family by her side. Born Oct. 31, 1930, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Vincent and Theresa (Gootee) Ash. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Loogootee. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. A Matthews family tradition was spending every Thursday night eating her homemade chili. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frank Matthews, whom she married Nov. 23, 1950; five daughters, Mary Rose and husband Mike Mangin, Nancy and husband Bob Spaulding, Linda and husband Mark Wickman, Brenda and husband John Mathias, and Donna and husband Jim Ader, all of Loogootee; four sons, Mike and wife Katie Matthews of Bloomfield, Tony Matthews of Jasper, Jim and wife Janet Matthew of Loogootee, and David and wife Kelly Matthews of Bedford; one sister, Marjorie Arvin of Loogootee; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ernestine Hunter and Mary Seal; and four brothers, Jim, John, Joe and Jerry Ash. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Catholic Church in Loogootee. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee. Online condolences may be made at www.brocksmithblakefuneralhomes.com
