---- — LOOGOOTEE — Donald O. Mathias, 83, died at 11:18 a.m. Friday at Loogootee Nursing Center.

Born June 23, 1930, in Daviess County, he was the son of Joseph F. and Barbara (Prechtel) Mathias.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Montgomery and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He attended Montgomery High School and was a local business owner where he had previously owned the former Abner Hotel and was co-owner of Mathias Tavern, both in Loogootee. He had also previously worked at U.S. Gypsum in Shoals and for many years transported Amish families. Donald enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and watching the St. Louis Cardinals and Indiana University basketball.

He is survived by his wife, Leona (Colvin) Mathias, whom he married July 4, 1956; and one brother, Delmar Mathies of Loogootee.

He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Victor, Robert, Ernest and Othmar Mathias; and three sisters, Ardella Norris, Genevia Riney and Doris Burger.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Montgomery. Burial was in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Montgomery, with graveside military services conducted by the American Legion and V.F.W.

Visitation was from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee.
