LOOGOOTEE — Ernest G. “Ernie” Mathias, 84, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Martin County Health Care and Rehab Center in Loogootee. Born April 16, 1928, in Daviess County, he was the son of Joseph F. and Barbara (Prechtel) Mathias. A 1947 graduate of Montgomery High School, he was a member of St. John Catholic Church and a Third Degree member of the Loogootee Knights of Columbus. For 30 years he owned and operated Mathias Tavern in Loogootee. He served on the Martin County Council for 16 years and was instrumental in the development of the Martin County Recycling Center. He was a former member of the Shoals Eagles and the Loogootee Jaycees. Ernie was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Anna Lou (Gootee) Mathias, whom he married Sept. 1, 1952; three sons, Mike Mathias and fiancee Valerie Kappes of Loogootee, John and wife Brenda Mathis of Loogootee, Charlie and wife Kathy Mathias of Petersburg; two daughters, Susan and husband Eric Ackerman of Loogootee, Christine and husband Scott Walker of Loogootee; three brothers, Othmar Mathias of Jasper, Donald Mathias and Delmar Mathias, both of Loogootee; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Victor and Robert Mathias; and three sisters, Ardella Norris, Genevia Riney and Doris Burger. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Catholic Church in Loogootee. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery in Loogootee. Visitation is from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee, with a Knights of Columbus Memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday evening.
