SAINT MARY-OF-THE WOODS — Sister Elizabeth Grannan, 81, passed away Friday. Sister Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Jane Grannan on March 30, 1933, the daughter of Leo Grannan and Mary Wilhelmina (Kroeger) Grannan, in Washington. She attended St. Simon grade school and Washington Catholic High School. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1952, and was given the name Sister Ellen Ann.
Sister Elizabeth earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and master’s degrees from Indiana University. Of her 62 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as teacher for 21 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois, and Maryland. She taught at St. Simon from 1966 to 1968. She also taught at St. John in Vincennes and St. Joseph in Jasper.
Having earned certification as a chaplain in 1978, Sister Elizabeth then ministered in hospitals and nursing homes in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and South Bend. After retiring in 2006, she remained in South Bend volunteering as nursing home visitor and grief counselor. She was well known for her deep compassion for the sick and dying and their families. In 2013 she returned to the Motherhouse where she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by sisters, Regina Lech and Esther Stumpf and brothers, Robert, Leo, and Paul Grannan as well as two brothers and four sisters who died in early infancy. The wake is Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the Wake Service at 4:30 p.m.
