VINCENNES — Betty Catherine Gaines Roberts, 79, died at 8:08 p.m. Thursday at Jasper Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 1, 1933, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Samuel Alvin and Helen (Downey) Gaines.
A homemaker, she was a 1951 graduate of Washington High School. She was a member of Harvest Community Fellowship.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Sue Cohen of Salina, Kan., Pamela Kay Perry of Bedford, and Tina Marie Thomas of Washington; two sons, John Robert (Dorothy) Perry of Washington, and William Lowell (Lynn) Purdue of Washington; four grandchildren she raised as her own children, Joshua Edwin Perry, Matthew Lee Kavanaugh, Adam Shane Kavanaugh and Nicholas Mitchell Perry; sisters, Judith Ann Woody of Shoals, Mary Eleanor (Jack) Purdue of Washington, Gwendolyn Suzzettea (Keith) Graber of Loogootee, Gale Darlene (Rick) Adam of Ellettsville and Tonja Jean (Scott) Fields of Bedford; brothers, Robert Eugene (Ellen) Gaines of Downey, Calif., and Terry Michael (Donna) Gaines of Cumback; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by a son, Christopher Alvin Purdue; two daughters, Sherrie Lynn Perry and Kimberly Denise Purdue; and two brothers, William Alvin and Samuel Alvin Gaines.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gill Chapel. Burial will be in Sugarland Memory Gardens.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Harvest Community Fellowship.
