WASHINGTON — Norman E. “Gene” Burkhardt Jr., 83, of Washington, died at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Washington Nursing Center. Born Nov. 8, 1929, in Washington, he was the son of Lyda (Hunter) and Norman E. Burkhardt Sr. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired as an electronic technician from the Air Force at Newark Air Force Base, Heath, Ohio. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge and American Legion. He loved old steam trains. He is survived by three sons, Robert L. Burkhardt Sr. of Lakeland, Fla., Donald J. Burkhardt of Rockledge, Fla., and John J. Burkhardt of Lakeland; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister, Rita Burkhardt of Largo, Fla. His wife, Marilyn Burkhardt, whom he married Dec. 19, 1953, died Sept. 24, 2012. His parents are also deceased. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Gill Chapel, with Pastor Brian Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Sugarland Memory Gardens. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
