GREENCASTLE — Colleen Gregory, 86, formerly of Rising Sun and Washington, passed away Friday at The Waters of Greencastle, where she was a resident for several years. She was very loved by staff and residents alike.
Colleen was born on Sept. 7, 1927, to Dean and Mabel (Gilmore) Hacker, in Ellettsville.
She graduated from Martinsville High School and attended Purdue University for the study of molds and bacteria, to help in her father’s tomato canning factory in Martinsville.
Colleen and husband, Kermit, who preceded her in death in 1999, owned Kermit E. Gregory Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Rising Sun for over 30 years. They retired and traveled to Cranberry Portage, Manitoba, Canada, where they had many close friends and spent hundreds of hours fishing in the surrounding lakes. In 1996 Colleen and Kermit moved to Van Bibber Lake Estates to be closer to family.
Surviving are her children, Saundra Gregory McLaughlin of Jacksonville, Fla., Patricia Gregory-Doyle and husband, Jim Doyle of Bainbridge, and Steven Gregory and wife, Dr. Terri Bonebright of Greencastle; seven grandchildren, Suzanne and Dr. Jeff Hess, Michael and Summer McLaughlin of Jacksonville, Ainley Doyle-Jewell and Mark Jewell of Colorado Springs, Colo., James K. Doyle of Brazil, Kurtis and Erin Gregory of Rising Sun, Robert and Tracia Gregory of Fort Wayne, and Randy Gregory of Indianapolis; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the former Somerset Christian Church of northern Putnam County.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1 p.m. May 10 at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral, Greencastle.
