Martha 'Marty' Green

Martha Ellen “Marty” Green, 95, of Washington passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at Daviess Community Hospital. Born on Oct. 6, 1918, in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of Royal and Ethel (Wohrer) Carlock.

A 1935 graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Maryland, she was a 1939 cum laude graduate of Franklin College where she met Stafford Freemont “Monty” Green whom she married on June 22, 1940. He preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 2002. Marty and Monty moved to Washington in 1952. Retiring in 1977, she was a Daviess County Welfare caseworker for 15 years.

Embracing Westminster Presbyterian Church as her “extended family” in Washington for the last 61 years, she was active in Presbyterian Women, served as Westminster’s first woman elder, and as past president of Vincennes Presbyterial. Marty was past president of the Beta Zeta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa, Monday Afternoon Club, Arts and Flowers Garden Club, and Friends of the Library. She was an alumnus of Delta Delta Delta college sorority.

Marty was loved and appreciated for her deep commitment to family and lifelong friends, keen intelligence, strength of purpose, community service, generosity and gracious style. She was an avid reader, played in several bridge clubs, loved crossword puzzles, enjoyed family reunions, frequent travel and the 19 winters she and Monty spent in North Fort Myers, Fla.

She is survived by three children, Dr. Roy (Nancy) Green of Ft. Myers, Fla., Steven (Jane) Green of Royal Oaks, Calif., and Ellen (Mike) McKittrick of Washington; five grandchildren, Laura (Kevin) Shrable of Bella Vista, Ark., Angela (Mike) Rosenbaum of San Jose, Calif., Eric Green of Royal Oaks, Calif., Andrew McKittrick of Bloomington, and Maggie McKittrick of Indianapolis; and five great-grandchildren, Ryan Rosenbaum, Troy Rosenbaum, Jenna Rosenbaum, Brett Shrable, and Emilee Shrable.

Predeceasing her were two half sisters, Roberta (Carlock) Broomhall and Bonnie (Carlock) Ledford and one half brother, Hubert Carlock. Her mother Ethel died in the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1920 when Martha Ellen was only 15 months old so she cherished a lifetime kinship with her Carlock and Wohrer grandparents and cousins in Jennings County, Indiana, with whom she spent summers throughout her childhood.
