---- — ODON - Hazel Merle Byrer, 76, died at 3:20 a.m. Saturday at Daviess Community Hospital.
Hazel was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Washington to Walter Gilley and Carrie Potts. She was graduated from Washington High School in 1955.
She married Victor Byrer Sr., on Jan. 12, 1990. Hazel was a member of First Christian Church, Washington. She was formerly employed with Daviess-Martin County REMC and Crane Naval Base. She was a member of VFW 9627 Ladies Auxiliary.
Hazel is survived by her husband Victor Byrer Sr., and children Mike (Beth) Gootee of Indianapolis, Carrie (Hershel) Sweet of Washington, Ronetta (Rick) Bough of Odon, Vickie Witsman of Odon, Victor Byrer Jr., of Odon and Kevin (Linda) Byrer of Odon.
Five sisters Dorothy “Dot” Jones, Shirley “Sally” Bradley, Nancy Myers and Ferbie Nolley, all of Washington, and Trudy Davis (Dale) of Columbus, Ind., also survive. Hazel is also survived by several grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Curtis George Gootee, grandson Jason Witsman, son-in-law Michael Witsman, two brothers Harold “Bud” Gilley and Walter L. “Giggs” Gilley and a sister, Mary Margret “Peg” Carlson.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. today at Gill Funeral Home, with services immediately following at 1 p.m. Steve Dayton will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Barr Township Cemetery, Loogootee. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
