Joseph M. Butler, 87, of Washington, passed away at 2:26 a.m. Monday at Daviess Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 18, 1926, in Washington, he was the son of Joseph D. and Margaret (McGrath) Butler. He was a graduate of Washington Catholic High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He had worked at McCord’s and at the Washington post office. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey L. (Bartesko) Butler, whom he married Nov. 19, 1955; three daughters, Sandra Hilgeman of Otwell, Marie (Mike) Smith of Winslow, and Lisa Small of Washington; one son, Louis (Debbie) Butler of Washington; one sister, Ida Mae Query of Peterburg; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frank Butler and Lawrence Edward Butler; three sisters, Marcella Mackey, Rose Austin, Martha “Tootie” Buckley, and Violet “Peewee” Carrico; and a son-in-law, John Hilgeman.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ed Lee Mortuary, with Rev. Gordon Mann and Yvonne Evans officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Washington American Legion and VFW.
Visitation is from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
