Quakes should be left in California

By Patricia Morrison

If you’re going to have an earthquake, you should at least have an ocean to go with it. That’s my feeling about our little episode from Friday.

We live in Indiana; we shouldn’t have to worry about earthquakes. People in California — land of Disney Land, pristine beaches and nearly perfect weather — pay for all those great views by having to worry about brush fires and earthquakes. It seems like a fair trade off. In Florida, they also have pristine beaches, nearly perfect weather and Disney World, and they pay for that by worrying about alligators and hurricanes.

We live in Indiana, no Disney anything, no beaches at all and really bad weather. Therefore, the fact that we have tornadoes and now earthquakes isn’t fair. Not fair at all.

Friday morning’s quake and aftershocks may be just the beginning as my son called from Phoenix (land of perfect weather until the temperature hits 110) to remind me. He says Indiana is due for the big one. Meaning we’re sitting on a fault that hasn’t sent us messages for a long, long time.

That’s OK with me. Mother Nature can keep that message. I didn’t like Friday’s shakes and would be perfectly happy to not repeat them during my lifetime, which I hope is at least another few decades.

I was actually working when that first quake came through. I was getting the police report at the sheriff’s office. I thought the prisoners were rioting. It wasn’t until the dispatchers’ phones started ringing off hook that I realized it was an earthquake. I immediately started looking for a beach.
