Lady Cards fly away with win

The only thing as warm as the weather outside the Birdcage on Monday, was what was heating up on the floor inside the Birdcage.

The Lady Cardinals followed up a win on Saturday, with a dominant victory over New Harmony, 59-28.

However, it was more than just a 31-point win, it featured a 22-point streak from the Cards to start the game and a scoreless run that lasted almost 13 minutes for the Lady Rappites.

“We wanted to come out and take away any idea that they were going to stay in the game,” said Washington Catholic coach Jim Mackey. “We didn’t want to come out and force a lot of things, they could make you look bad. I thought the girls came out and did a good job of executing. They made good decisions and it seemed like we had people make the extra pass.”

Samantha Arnold set the tone for the Cards with the first five points of the game. She ended the night with 10 total points and seven in the first quarter.

Morgan Buckley led all scoring with 20 points, including four in the first quarter, during the 18-0 shutout. Jodie Carie also grabbed all five of her points during the opening stanza.

“Sammy got us started off right,” said Mackey. “She hit her first two shots and then Morgan took over in the second. Morgan did what she needed to do. She got the ball down low and went up strong. She can shot the ball from the 10-12 foot range, but we don’t need her shooting 16 footers. We need her inside.

The Cards led 22-0 when Sarah Trembozoski finally put New Harmony on the board, with just under four minutes to play in the second.

New Harmony would also hit a pair of 3-pointers, during the quarter, but it was not enough to slow down WC, which had 16, including six more from Buckley, a trey from Megan Worland and baskets from Katie Sellers and Jordan Crew.

Logan Crew made an immediate impact in the third quarter with a pair of baskets, while Rachel Wichman scored and Sellers added her second bucket, to go along with a trey from Arnold and six points for Buckley.

“We got a lot of good workout of girls who maybe don’t get to play that much at the varsity level,” added Mackey. “Katie Sellers did a very nice job and I think that she will be able to help us down the road once she gets a little stronger and works on her jumping. I thought Emily Schnarr came in and did a nice job and so did Kacey LaGrange. She made some nice decisions with her passes and played some nice defense.”

Jacie Carie got on the board in the final quarter with a bucket, as the Lady Cards stretched the lead to the 59-28 final, in spite of the Rappites draining six treys for the night.

After Buckley and Arnold’s combined 30 points, Jordan and Logan Crew split 12 points, Jodie Carie and Sellers had five each, while Worland ended with three and Wichman and Jacie Carie had two each. The Rappites were led by Brittany Davis with 10 and Amber Williams with nine.

The Lady Cards face North Central on Thursday and Linton Saturday.
