Hatchets, B-R play in 4-way at Elks
VINCENNES — The Washington Hatchet golf team competed in a four-way meet with Lincoln, South Knox and Barr Reeve at the Vincennes Elks.
In clearly the team’s best outing of the season, the Hatchets shot their best score of the year to date with a round of 169.
South Knox won the event with an impressive round of 153. Jack Harlow fired a one-over par 36 and teammate Adam Schenck shot a 37 to win meet medalists honors.
“South Knox is one of the sectional favorites and this outing shows why,” said WHS coach Bill Ricke. “They posted scores of 36, 37, 39 and 41 for their team score and did not use scores of 42 and 44.”
The Hatchets and Lincoln tied at 169, but Washington got second place due to the fifth man’s score being lower. Josh Wirey shot his low round of the season with a tidy round of 39.
“Josh has never worked on his game in the off season, choosing to concentrate on soccer. Josh has been a four-year starter for us and this is about the time of year he always begins to find his "A" game. Obviously he is very talented to be able to accomplish this,” added Ricke.
Chase Taylor and Garrett Winkler were next in the scoring with rounds of 43 each.
“Chase shot his best score of his last five outings and really showed some signs of confidence. Chase's off season golf scenario is very similar to Josh's and it looked tonight that Chase was a little more confident and relaxed than he has been. Garrett Winkler also posted his best score of the season. Garrett is getting better every day and his ball striking is much more consistent than it was two weeks ago. He is gaining confidence and is beginning to understand how to play the game.”
Kasey Igleheart rounded out the team scoring with a 44 and Bryce Fox shot a 45.
“Bryce's round was very critical for us tonight in that it served as the tie-breaker to give us the win over Lincoln. Overall, the team is getting to the point where they are not thinking swing mechanics as much when they compete, but rather are simply playing and concentrating on scoring. This frame of mind will keep us improving steadily,” said Ricke.
Barr-Reeve posted a team score of 217, with Eric Blair shooting 50, Jonah Otto at 53, Lance Miller with a 55 and Trey Showalter at 59.

Jodie Carie played well in a tough three-set match. North Posey’s doubles team were some of the best I have seen so far this year, so it was tough for our doubles matches.”
