WC wins in 8 innings

By Todd Lancaster, Sports Editor

For those in the mood for good, old-fashioned baseball, then Rees Field was the place to be on Tuesday.

Washington Catholic used a superb pitching effort from Matt Bezy to down Northeast Dubois, 3-2 in extra innings.

Bezy dominated the Jeeps, limiting them to just two runs and struck out eight, but NED was able to scrape up two runs to force WC into extra innings, before the Cards were able to score David Wichman all the way first base on an overthrow.

“What a performance from Matt Bezy on the mound,” said WC coach Steve Reed. “He had that rythym all day. At 0 and 2 he was climbing the ladder and at 1 and 2 he was breaking it off at the knees. He pitched well and we played baseball behind him.

“This was what baseball is all about, 3-2 and extra innings, this is what it is all about, giving the fans a little something extra for there money. It was unfortunate, because their guy (Evan Hulsner) threw it well also.”

Both Bezy and NED’s Evan Hulsner both looked very solid through the first three innings, however, WC drew first blood.

In the fourth, Ron Bozarth singled and was replaced with Cam Graber on the base paths. Graber then scored after a Scott McDonald sacrifice and Adrian Wilson reached on an error.

The Jeeps finally reached Bezy for a run in the sixth inning after a two-out error and a double from Kale Terwiskie tied it up. But WC came right back in the bottom of the inning.

Damon Wilson lined a double down the right field line, followed by a single from Bozarth.

The Jeeps then faced their final at bat in the top of the seventh, but were able to get a single Hulsner to help his own cause and tie up the game again.

Adrian Wilson led off with a double in the bottom of the seventh that looked like it had a chance to get out, before being slowed up by the 20 mph wind blowing in, but was unable to score. Wilson hit the ball well all day going 2-3 and reaching all three times.

“Adrian swung the bat really well all day,” added Reed.

“We really didn’t get the big hits today except for the one from Bozarth, but they were hard hit and timely,” said Reed. WC ended the day with eight hits, including two from Bozarth.

WC came up with the winning run in eighth, when Wichman reached on an error. Then with two out, Damon Wilson reached on an error and Wichman was able to score on the overthrow.

“Really we won on two balls that should have been outs,” said Reed. “You have a chance when you hit the ball hard on the ground. They have to do three things; they have to field it, throw it and someone else has to catch it.”
