Local wrap-up for Wednesday

LOOGOOTEE — Loogootee downed Pike Central 7-2 at Les Page Field on Tuesday.

Loogootee (14-11) scored two runs in the first and second innings, then plated three more runs in the sixth to support the pitching of Roland Slaubaugh, who improved to 8-4 on the season with a complete game victory. Slaubaugh allowed just six hits and threw six shutout innings before allowing a pair of runs in the seventh.

Slaubaugh was 3-3 at the plate with two stolen bases and an RBI. Derek Parsons was 3-3 for the Lions with a two run home run while driving in three runs. Wyllie Wagoner had a pair of hits and scored three runs, while Patrick Bowling and Mitch Harder had two hits each.

Loogootee will host Southridge at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Lady Lions fall at regional; Doubles advance

JASPER — The Loogootee Lady Lion tennis team ended its season at Jasper with a 4-1 loss to Evansville Memorial, but the No. 1 doubles team will continue to advance. The team of Valerie Wickman and Sarah Allen defeated Hannah McNabb and Meg Carver 6-4, 6-0 for Loogootee’s only win.

“Sarah and Valerie played a near perfect match at No. 1 doubles today. When they play like they did today, they are fun to watch. I hope they can follow it up with the same kind of performance this Saturday,” said LHS coach Mike Tippery.

Memorial got wins at every other spot as Abby Grief defeated Emily Callahan, 6-0 and 6-2, and

Taryn Tennyson beat Andrea Vaupel 6-3 and 6-4.

Lauren Ward added a win over Brittney Bateman 6-1 and 6-2, while Kate Elpers and McKensie Crabtree beat Loogootee’s Chelsea Strange and Ashton Matthews 2 and 2.

“I can’t say enough about our lone senior, Chelsea Strange. Every year she improved. She got to play a few varsity matches her junior year and finally cracked the line-up her senior year. She made the most of it finishing the season with a 19-4 record, one win shy of the school record for most wins in a season,” added Tippery.

“With seven returning players that played at least ten varsity matches this year, I am already exited about the prospects for next year.”

Vikings fall in 9th inning

OAKLAND CITY — The Wood Memorial Trojan baseball team picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Barr-Reeve 6-5 on Monday.

Ashton Stutzman took the loss, going 8 1/3. He gave up all six runs but only of which were earned. Luke Harmon also faced two batters in the ninth. Stutzman faced 40 batters in the game and gave up 11 hits while striking out four.
