MONTGOMERY — The Gasthof Village served as host for the 5K Blue Chip Conference cross country meet Thursday and for the third straight year the name on the boys’ trophy will remain that of Barr-Reeve.
The Vikings again posted a strong group effort to win the title with 33 points, to beat out Northeast Dubois (50) and South Knox (64).
Conrad Knepp anchored the Barr-Reeve team with a third place finish, behind Josh Genet of Northeast Dubois (16:27) and Nate Westfall (16:35). The Vikings then dominated the next 12 spots with Geoff Taylor in sixth (17:23), Trey Showalter in seventh (17:30), Nick Cornelius was 10th (17:37) and Jeremy Huebner was 12th (18:03), all who were named All-BCC. Trey Madison came in 13th (18:09) and Dillon Graber was 15th, with an 18:46.
“We have been progressing over the last couple of weeks and have come along a little slowly,” said B-R coach JayR Perkins. “We are hitting our peak about two weeks later than in the last two years. Last year we were about a week early, so hopefully it will be at regional this year.
“Everyone ran well today. We were all better than at our invitational and anytime you do that, you are progressing. Geoff Taylor is back, but not where he wants to be, but in two weeks he will be ready. This was a tune up and we ran well.”
North Knox came in fourth (103) and Loogootee had the final team spot with a 132.
The Lions were led by Roland Slaubaugh was the top Lion runner in 14th place with a 18:41.
He was followed by Pat Bowling in 25th, Gage Love in 42nd, Prestin Hart was 43rd and Austin Bailey was 46th.
Washington Catholic had one runner, Danny Norton, who finished in 44th place.
The Barr-Reeve girls were the top area girls team, finishing third with 60 points. The race was won by South Knox with 31, who just nipped NED, who had 32.
The Vikings were topped by Audrey Blair in seventh with a 21:50. Abby Pielmeier was also all-BBC with an 11th (22:16). Other Viking runners included Haley Kavanaugh in 13th (22:50), Elisha Bault in 16th (23:13), Kayti Taylor was 19th (24:02) and Kylee O’Connor was 26th (25:52).
“This was good. Each one of our girls improved their times over our invitational two weeks ago,” said B-R coach Kevin Heller. “Even though we finished third, I’m satisfied the girls are running the best they have all season.
“I believe we have a shot at advancing out of sectional as a team and I think we will definitely have a couple in the top-15 to advance as individuals. I’m very proud of all the girls, but I’m especially proud of Audrey Blair and Kylee O’Connor who are both first-year runners.”
Loogootee had one runner in the top 12, as Lauren Poirier was 10th (22:16). Andrea Vaupel was 17th (23:15) and Ashley Sutton was 21st (24:24).
WC had one runner, Rachel Wichman, who finished in 20th (24:19).
The girls’ overall winner was Emily Brown of South Knox (20:35) and her teammate Dani Oexmann (21:02) in second.
