The fan in the stands who called down to Washington quarterback Beau Parsons late in the game pretty much said it all — “Hey Beau, we’re playing in November!”

Indeed it will be November when the Hatchets, for the first time in school history, play for a football sectional championship next week after Washington destroyed Evansville Bosse 56-13 at Hatchet Hollow on Friday.

Just as they did in upsetting Class 3A No. 9 Mt. Vernon last week, Washington (8-3) dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage and rolled up a huge game on the ground in ousting Bosse (3-8) from Sectional 24.

“It was a great game for our kids. Just like last week, we came out and executed the things we worked on in practice this week,” said Hatchet coach Kelly Brashear.

The Hatchets wound up with 453 yards on the ground on 48 carries, including 155 yards on 18 attempts from leading rusher Nick Williams, who torched Mt. Vernon for 174 yards last week.

Williams scored three touchdowns on the ground, the first a 12-yard run with 2:04 left in the first quarter which tied the game at 7-7 after Bosse had scored on its initial possession. Williams followed up that first rushing score with a 35-yard interception return of a Joe Frazier pass which, when coupled with a Tanner Fritschle extra point, put WHS up 14-7 after one quarter of play.

That lead grew to 21-7 at the half when Joe McCormick scored from 20-yards out late in the first half on a reverse.

Any hope of a Bosse was quickly extinguished in the second half. On Washington’s first play from scrimmage, Williams dashed and darted his way for 75 yards and his second rushing touchdown of the evening for a 28-7 Hatchet lead. Two plays into Bosse’s next possession Joe McCormick picked off a Frazier screen pass at the Bulldog 19 and ran it back for his second touchdown of the game. Fritschle’s fifth extra point gave WHS a 35-7 lead and the rout was on.

Williams would add another rushing touchdown, as would Ben Obaseki and Will McCormick, in the second half for WHS, each followed by Fritschle extra points.

“Our offense was just clicking all night. Our offensive line, the holes were huge,” said Brashear. “We were concerned when they (Bosse) came out in a seven man front, they had all the gaps filled. But our line just did a great job of sustaining blocks, and our backs did a great job of hitting holes hard.”

Fullback Logan Hawthorne also topped 100 yards for the Hatchets with 119 yards on nine carries, while Joe McCormick finished with 68 yards on four carries. Will McCormick, playing on his 18th birthday, also had 68 yards on the ground on seven attempts, and he too, would have gone over 100 yards rushing had a 50-yard touchdown run not been called back due to a holding penalty late in the fourth quarter.

Washington’s defense gave up a quick score to open the game when Frazier drove the Bulldogs 67-yards in just four plays, the touchdown coming on a nine-yard carry from Josh Pendelton. But the Hatchet defense clamped down after that, not allowing another touchdown until Frazier snuck in from one-yard out late in the fourth quarter after the outcome was no longer in doubt.

Though Pendelton finished the contest with 144 yards on 23 carries, that figure was deceiving as he picked up 24 meaningless yards on the final play of the first half, and got 67-yards on one carry in the fourth quarter. Otherwise, the Hatchet defense shut down the Bulldogs both on the ground and through the air.

“They got that quick touchdown on us, but once we adjusted, we shut them down from there,” said Brashear.

In addition, the Hatchets did the job on special teams — Fritschle was perfect on eight extra points, and Washington kept Bosse’s speedy kick returners, Kieron Hardon and Jon’el Hughes, in check, mainly thanks to Will McCormick, who had five special teams tackles.
