VINCENNES - The Washington wrestling competed at the Vincennes Lincoln Invitational Saturday. The team finished with an 0-5 record for the weekend, losing to Terre Haute South (60-21), North Knox (42-24), Lawrenceville (51-30), tourney champs South Vermillion (77-3), and host Vincennes (36-30).
Individually, 152 lb. senior Beau Parsons went a perfect 5-0 on the day, with three pins. Sophmore Raulie Velazquez (130 lbs.), freshman CD Breedan (215 lbs.) and junior Nate Lundy (heavyweight) also had winning records. Velazquez and Lundy each went 3-2 and Breeden, in place of injured starter Heath Hedrick, went 2-1. Dakota Bullock (140 lb) went 2-3, and picking up a win each were Cornelius King (135 lbs.), Trent Jones (145 lbs.), Lance Harner (160 lbs.) and Heath Hedrick (215). In JV action, picking up wins were Tyler Clark (140lbs.), and Randy Mitchell (heavyweight).
"As a team, we were hurt badly by forfeiting 4 weight classes, due to various reasons. Giving up 24 points in dual meet is hard to come back from. In actual head to head matchups, we were in the thick of things," said Washington coach John Thompson. "Our kids were very competitive and never gave up, we saw a lot of improvement over last season. However, we do need to work on plenty of things in practice this week.
"Individually, Beau Parsons looked great, he had to gut out two very tough wins against Terre Haute South and South Vermillion, handing those wrestlers their first losses of the season," said Thompson. "He needed those matches, if he wants to go far this season, you need a few of those kinds of matches under your belt.
"Raulie Velazquez really impressed me by pinning his first opponent and going toe to toe with a regional qualifier from North Knox (losing 13-5) and a state finalist from South Vermillion (losing 19-4). He has a lot of heart, giving his all no matter who he's going against," said Thompson. "Nate Lundy did a fine job today. He was very close to being 4-1 on the day, but one slip up changed a match for him. CD Breedan, who is wrestling for the first time ever, did a great job stepping for Heath Hedrick, who went out with a knee injury after his second match. His first varsity match ever, he steps out there and pinned his opponent from Lawrenceville. He was nervous beforehand, but after that, I think we was just fine."
Washington's next meet will be Saturday at the North Knox Invitational, starting at 8:30 a.m.
