LOOGOOTEE — The Indiana State Police are investigating the circumstances behind the death of an 11-month-old child.
Investigators report that yesterday afternoon, the child’s babysitter had placed the child into a car seat and buckled the child in. After securing the child in the seat, the babysitter realized that the child needed a change of diaper. The babysitter unfastened the crotch buckle of the seat, and left the room to get another diaper. The babysitter stated she was gone from the room for no more than two minutes to retrieve the diaper and refill a drink for another child; upon her return, she found the child had slid down in the seat and become asphyxiated by the upper portion of the seat harness.
The babysitter contacted emergency aid and attempted to perform CPR on the child until first responders arrived. The child was eventually pronounced as deceased.
An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Thursday. No identities are being released at this time. The case remains under investigation.
