Cougars lose final game to Springs Valley

FRENCH LICK — In their final tune up before the sectional, the North Daviess football team walked into a buzz saw at Death Valley.

The Cougars (3-6) lost to Springs Valley (4-5) 54-22 on the Blackhawks senior night behind five touchdowns from senior quarterback Levi Weddle.

Weddle and the Blackhawks offense got off to a fast start and the Cougars defense was powerless to do anything to slow them down. On their opening drive after a 38-yard kick return by Weddle, the senior quarterback led his offense on a 53-yard drive capped by a 16-yard touchdown run by senior running back Sebastian Baggett. Weddle ran in a direct snap to give Springs Valley an early 8-0 lead.

The Cougars came out throwing with quarterback Brady Helms completing his first two passes to Colton Lengacher and Zach Baker for 20 yards, a change from the run-heavy North Daviess offense. On a third down and one from the Blackhawks’ 40, Helms tried to sneak it for a first down, but the junior coughed up the ball and Springs Valley recovered. At the time, it appeared the Cougars missed a big chance to even the score, but in retrospect it might not have mattered.

The Blackhawks answered with their second touchdown in as many drives with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Nachreiner from Weddle on a first and 20, giving Springs Valley a 14-0 lead. After forcing a North Daviess punt, the Blackhawks offense struck once again, this time on a Weddle 48-yard touchdown run pushing the lead to 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter brought even more offense from Valley Springs, Weddle connected with Baggett for a 30-yard touchdown pass extending the lead to 28-0 nine seconds into the second quarter. The next two possessions saw more of the same from the Blackhawks offense as they pushed their lead to 41-0 at halftime.

The Blackhawks 41-point first half was nine points short of the season high in points from the Aug. 24th 50-21 win against Mitchell. Springs Valley averaged an astonishing 15 yards per play in the first two quarters. Weddle connected on all four passes he attempted for 157 yards and three touchdowns. The senior ran six times for 107 yards for two more touchdowns.

North Daviess managed only four first downs against the staunch Blackhawks defense, compared to the 15 first downs that the Cougars defense allowed. The Springs Valley offense faced a mere three third downs in the first half.

The Cougars made a switch at quarterback bringing in freshman Andrew Medcalf, who promptly put North Daviess on the board on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Helms to cut the deficit to 35 points. Helms, back in a quarterback on the Cougars next drive scored his second touchdown of the night on a one-yard sneak into the end zone. The deficit was 41-14 after Lengacher ran in the two-point conversion.

Backup quarterback Isaac Brown connected with sophomore receiver Blake Robling for a touchdown to extend the lead to 48-14 with a little over seven minutes to play in regulation.

The Cougars added a 65-yard touchdown from Lengacher and a Helms sneak on the two-point conversion put the deficit at 48-22. Brown found sophomore Jacob Cook on a three-yard touchdown pass in the closing minutes for the final margin of 54-22.

After the resounding win to end the regular season on a high note after losing their previous two games, the Blackhawks will host North Decatur in the first round of sectional 39 next Friday. The Cougars, losers of two in a row and three of their last four will visit Union Dugger in the first round of sectional 40 next Friday. The Cougars won at Union Dugger 42-14 on Sept. 14.
