For the last eight years, Samantha Porter’s birthday has been celebrated with a balloon release and 5K at North Daviess High School — always on or near March 10. This year, her family is hoping for the biggest celebration yet.
“This year we will be celebrating her 25th birthday and hope that it will be the biggest and best yet as we go out with a bang,” said Ginger Porter, Samantha’s mother. “The eighth annual Running With an Angel, Samantha Porter 5K Run/Walk will take place on March 8.”
Porter, affectionately known as Sam, was a member of the North Daviess High School class of 2013. She was tragically killed in a car accident on her way home from football senior night’s festivities on Sept. 28, 2012. Sam was active in 4-H, Red Cross, softball, band, student council, cross country and was a cheerleader among other activities. She also spent one summer in the fields detasseling corn and worked at a corn maze one fall.
Proceeds from the 5K benefit the Samantha Elisabeth Porter Memorial Scholarship Fund that is awarded to graduating seniors of North Daviess who have the same spirit as Sam. To date 46 $1,000 scholarships have been given out in Sam’s memory.
“It’s going to be our last year to host it but we will still be giving out scholarships,” said Porter, who said registration forms for the final 5K can be found online at samanthaporter.webs.com or at sam5k.wufoo.com/forms/zlaefto)17g5tb.
Registration is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the one-mile kids’ fun run for children 12 and under. Those who register and pay by Feb. 22 will receive a T-shirt. Same-day registration is also available but shirts are not guaranteed.
On March 8, registration will open at noon with the fun run slated for 1:30 p.m. At the conclusion of the fun run, a balloon release will be held and the 5K will begin at 2 p.m.
