HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM GENERATIONS! Generations would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Although our celebrations may look different this year, let us strive to count our blessings, not our problems. “Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” – Charles Dickens

GENERATIONS TO OFFER ONLINE CHRONIC DISEASE SELF-MANAGEMENT PROGRAM:

  • According to the National Council on Aging, about 80% of older adults have at least one chronic disease, and 68% have at least two. Many adults with conditions such as arthritis, asthma, diabetes, lung disease, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and others struggle to find ways to manage their condition. Generations will be offering a free ONLINE 3-week course, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, every Tuesday and Friday beginning Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This program will address issues faced by individuals dealing with chronic disease. Some of the topics discussed during the course of this program are: techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, isolation and poor sleep; decision-making skills to better deal with medication use and treatment options; exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance; pacing activity and rest; nutrition gaps; and action planning. For more information, or to register, please contact Cathy Jones at 812-888-5159. Please note that this class was originally scheduled to be in-person but will now be held online.

PECANS FOR SALE: Generations’ Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is, once again, selling pecans for all of your holiday baking needs! These pecans are fresh from Georgia from the most recent pecan crop. Prices are $10 per bag with your choice of either a 12 oz. bag of small pieces, or a 12 oz. bag of halves. Money raised from these sales support projects that benefit our local community such as Children’s Vision Screening, Little Elves Workshops, Love-A-Bears, Pet Pad Program, etc. Please contact Generations at 1-800-742-9002 to arrange purchase and pick up. We are located in the Zella Young Building on the campus of Vincennes University, 1019 N 4th St., Vincennes, IN. Please call the office when you arrive and a staff person will bring your pecans down to you. Thank you!

NEED HELP WITH MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT: Generations continues to take appointments for SHIP (State Health Insurance Plan) counseling to assist you in choosing your best option for your Medicare prescription drug plan. The best plan for you could change from year to year depending on your health, medications, etc. Do not assume that the plan that you have always had is the best for you. Let us help you take a look at all of your options, and then YOU decide which plan that you want to go with. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment with one of our SHIP counselors, please call us at 1-800-742-9002.

IT IS TIME AGAIN FOR BUILD-A-BASKET: This holiday season, Generations is sponsoring its 12th annual Build-A-Basket project to help provide for the basic needs of Generations’ clients while bringing them some holiday cheer. Generations serves older adults in Daviess, Dubois, Greene, Knox, Martin and Pike counties. These individuals are on fixed incomes and often cannot afford the everyday necessities that many of us take for granted. This project is open to schools, churches, businesses and individuals. Just purchase a laundry basket or tote and fill it with items such as dish soap, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. Many individuals also decorate their baskets to make them more festive. A list of suggested basket items, as well as list of drop-off sites is available on the Generations’ website at www.generationsnetwork.org and on the Generations’ Facebook page. You may register your basket online by following the link on the website or Facebook post. Baskets must be completed and dropped off no later than December 11th. Generations’ staff and volunteers will deliver the gift baskets. For questions, or to register your basket by phone, please contact Alma Kramer at 812-888-4527, toll-free at 1-800-742-9002, or by e-mail at akramer@vinu.edu.
