The Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Epsilon State, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met at Harpers’ Party Barn on Oct. 1, 2019. The organization is a professional honor society for women educators. Hostesses for the evening were Sue Harper and the Washington teachers and retirees. Members were treated to a variety of Brazilian foods prepared by M & M Catering to enhance the Brazilian theme for the meeting. Table favors of Brigadeiros, Brazilian chocolate truffles, were made by Ronetta Bough and her students at North Daviess High School.

Co-president Jayna Wild conducted the business meeting. Wild introduced the guests, Carol Olsen and Sub Weber, the state liaison for the Alpha Delta Chapter. Olsen will be initiated into membership at the December meeting. Also, in attendance was the chapter’s newest member, Donna Keller.

Ronetta Bough gave a presentation on her experiences in Brazil as a part of the Bilateral Educator Exchange. She visited Brazil in June and stayed with a host family. Bough shared information about the culture and schools there. Elementary and junior high students attend school from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and high school students attend school from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. This allows students time during the day to work. She prepared some chimarrão for members to see (and taste if they wanted). Chimarrão, a style of yerba mate, is a local favorite in southern Brazil. In Brazil, the drinking of yerba mate is practiced as a social ritual. Friends and family gather in a circle as the host prepares the beverage in a “cuia” and drinks the first infusion with a filtered straw called a “bomba.” The cuia is refilled and passed to each guest in the circle. Everyone shares the same cuia and bomba, joining in a bond of acceptance and friendship.

Bough is also a recipient of the EF Excellence Award in Language Teaching. This award celebrates language teachers who have created exceptional learning experiences for their students. Bough and other worldwide winners of the award met at a Global Summit in New York City where they exchanged best practices.

Rhonda York invited members to see the stage play of Steel Magnolias at Veale Creek Theater on Oct. 18-20. She will be playing the role of Truvy Jones.

Audrey Case’s class at N.E. Dubois is starting a business making various objects with their laser engraver and router.

The next meeting will be Dec. 3 at the Iron Kettle in Plainville.
