VINCENNES — A Washington man is dead following a two-vehicle accident in Vincennes overnight. Indiana State Police report Skylar Newton, 21, was killed when the moped on which he was a passenger was struck in the rear.

Troopers say the accident happened around 9:46 p.m. Thursday when a 2015 Jeep Cherokee driven by Kayla Jones, 26, Bicknell, pulled onto northbound U.S. 41 from the Willow Street exit. Investigators say Jones’ vehicle was in the travel lane when it struck a 2019 moped in the rear. Newton was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator of the moped, Robert Vaquero, 22, Huntingburg, was seriously injured.

Vaquero was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and later flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville.

State police report neither Newton or Vaquero were wearing helmets.

Jones told troopers she did not see the moped until just prior to the collision. Investigators inspected the moped and determined the rear taillight was not illuminated at the time of the crash.
