Last Christmas the Washington Area Ministerial Association and Westminster Presbyterian Church sponsored the Daviess County Community Christmas Cantata which included 25 vocalists, eight instrumentalists, and three narrators from 12 different area churches covering four counties. This Christmas Community Choir has recently been invited to participate in the New York premiere performance of Pepper Choplin’s cantata “Resurrected: From the Tomb to Pentecost” on Monday, May 25, 2020, at the Lincoln Center.
Recently Distinguished Concerts International New York reached out to choir director Joyce Kim-Rohrer after learning about the performance last year of Pepper Choplin’s Heart of Christmas. Kim-Rohrer discussed this incredible opportunity with Westminster minister Rev. Cheryl Thorne, and they decided to submit an audition recording of the cantata performance from last year. As a result of that recording, the artistic committee at DCINY has formally invited the community choir to perform at Lincoln Center in New York City with an international festival choir of over 200 voices, accompanied by a full orchestra, and conducted by the composer Pepper Choplin. This event will take place on Memorial Day weekend May 2020.
All members of the choir last year and any members of the community who would like to participate are invited to join the group. The Christmas cantata was so well-received last year that Kim-Rohrer stated the plan is to still perform another community Christmas cantata this year. The group will then rehearse the music for the trip in the spring and perform the cantata both in New York City and Washington, Indiana. Singers must be seventh grade or older. All middle school and high school students who would like to travel to New York City must have a chaperon who is a part of the group.
Anyone interested in participating in this once in a lifetime event should attend an informational meeting on Thursday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. If you are unable to attend this meeting, but are interested in joining the community choir please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 812-254-4443.
