Purdue Extension-Daviess County will be hosting, “Communicating with Farmers Under Stress” on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019, at Iron Kettle restaurant, 996 Second St., in Plainville. The program will run from 10 a.m.– to 2 p.m., with registration starting at 9:30 a.m.

During the last several years, weak commodity prices, unpredictable markets, high input costs and weather conditions, especially this past spring, have all created a compound effect on farming, causing a decline in farm income.

As resilient as our farmers may be, they are not immune to the struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, indecision or suicidal thoughts. As part of the agricultural community that we call home, you may want to help, but are not sure what to say or do or, maybe as part of your job, you find yourself having to deliver difficult news to farmers. This program will help you recognize and respond when you suspect a farmer or farm family member might need assistance. This program is designed specifically for those who work with farmers and their families.

Target audiences include, but are not limited to: Ag lenders, loan officers and account managers; seed and chemical dealers reps; co-op staff and other agribusiness professionals, as well as mental health professionals and other community counselors, who may benefit from more insight into specific aspects of stress related to farmers and farming. However, anyone is welcome to attend.

You will learn to build awareness around potentially stressful conditions affecting some farmers; identify stress triggers, signs of stress and review helpful techniques for responding. You will also learn techniques for identifying, approaching and working with farmers who may not cope with stress effectively, and where to go for additional help.

The program is free, but registration is required by Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019.

Complimentary lunch will be available
