The aroma of chili soup will linger on Main Street from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday when the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce hosts a Chili Festival at the site of the future park on the corner of N.E. Second and E. Main streets.

There will be a competition for the best chili, resulting in cash prizes and bragging rights for the winners. Inflatables and other games will be on the parking lot on N.E. Third and E. Main streets. Vender booths will be set up along Main Street and in the Gateway Center.

Individuals who wish to participate in the chili competition can enter in advance by calling the Chamber at 254-5262 or arrive Saturday by 9 a.m. All chili must be prepared on the premises.

“People need to bring all their cooking equipment and a table, and if they want any kind of a canopy, they can bring that with them and enough ingredients to make a minimum of three gallons of chili,” Daviess County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Charles Selby said.

Individuals who wish to set up a vender booth or have a yard sale table can enter in advance by calling the Chamber as well or arrive Saturday anytime between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Vendors, who should bring their own tables, are free to come and go as they wish.

“Our goal would be to get about 500 people coming through,” Selby said, confident many will show up to support the city’s endeavors.

Those attending must purchase a wristband for $5 which allows individuals to eat chili at any or all of the booths. The proceeds from the wristbands and games will be used toward the new park construction.

“People can come down and show their civic spirit by supporting this event that will help us build the park and get the opportunity to eat some darn-good chili,” Selby added.
