A prominent businessman in northern Daviess County died in a traffic accident late Tuesday morning. Indiana State Police are investigating the accident that claimed the life of Lance Parsons, 58, Odon. The accident was reported near the intersections of CR 1225E and CR 1400N, not far from Parsons' home and track.
Troopers report the crash was reported just after 10 a.m. Tuesday. State Police report Parsons was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Spark south on CR 1225E when the vehicle went left of center at a hillcrest about 1700 feet south of CR 1400N and collided head-on with a 2005 Pontiac Montana mini-van that was traveling northbound. Police say Parsons was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. The driver of the Pontiac, Julie Windergerst, 48, Odon was transported to IU Health Hospital in Bloomington where she is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Windergerst was wearing a seatbelt.
Parsons was well known in Daviess County and around the area. He was originally in the construction business, but in later years spent a lot of time concentrating on building and operating the Parsons Moto Sports Compound northeast of Odon. The track was a popular destination of families involved in racing dirt bikes. It hosted several events each year since opening.
While the track was popular with the motocross crowd it was less liked by neighbors in the Painted Acres subdivision who went before Daviess County officials a number of times complaining about the dust and noise associated with the track.
Parsons death has led the Parsons Moto Sports Compound to shut down for awhile. A posting on the business' Facebook page announced that the Compound will be closed for a couple of weeks while "they figure things out."
Indiana State Police were assisted by the Daviess County Sheriff's Department, Madison Township Fire Department and the Daviess County Coroner's Office.
The fatal accident was the second in Daviess County in a 24 hour span. Around 10:50 a.m Monday Daviess County Sheriff's deputies investigated a one vehicle accident on CR 600E near CR 900N. Officials say Susan Hert, 63, Odon was killed when the pick-up truck she was driving went out of control on the gravel road and went head-on into an embankment.
