Wilma L. Bateman, 73, died at 11:10 a.m. Monday at Memorial Hospital and Health Care in Jasper. Born Dec. 23, 1936, in Loogootee, she was the daughter of Floyd and Thelma (Madden) Perry. She was a 1955 graduate of St. John High School and a member of St. John Catholic Church in Loogootee. She was a retired deli manager at Buehler’s Grocery Store in Washington and had recently worked at the Loogootee St. Vincent DePaul Store. Wilma was an avid golfer and tennis player. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and watching them play sports. She is survived by her husband, Jim Bateman, whom she married Jan. 28, 1956; one daughter and son-in-law, Sammi and Brian Nelson of Loogootee; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Kim Bateman of Tucson, Ariz., Kevin Bateman of Edina, Minn., Randy Bateman of Tucson, Greg and Lynn Bateman and Chris and Mykle Bateman, all of Loogootee; five grandchildren, Perri Bateman, Brittney Bateman, Colin Nelson, Emily Bateman and Erin Nelson; and one brother and sister-in-law, James and Sheila Perry of Green Valley, Ariz. She is preceded in death by her parents. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church in Loogootee. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brocksmith Funeral Home. Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home.
