If the Lady Hatchets (16-3) were an engine, then they were running on all cylinders on Thursday in the Hatchet House.
After being down 7-5 in the first quarter, WHS went on a 50-7 run over the next 2 1/2 quarters to dominate the North Posey Vikings in a 59-27 win.
Jesse Ledgerwood owned the outside with four 3-pointers and 18 total points, while Kencia Levasseur had 17 and Alaina Thorne also added 13 in the paint.
WHS played on of its most complete game of the season, limiting the Vikings to just five points in the middle two quarters.
“We just weren’t very tough in the first quarter and they executed well,” said WHS coach Gretchen Miles. “We did a great job of turning rebounds into transition baskets in the second and that really made the difference.
“Jesse (Ledgerwood) is just shooting so well right now and I don’t know if anyone finishes around the basket as well as Kencia. She is our glue right now.”
Ledgerwood opened the game with a 3-ball shooting over the North Posey zone, however the Vikes took an early 4-3 lead. A Thorne block led to a Hatchet bucket, while Ledgerwood added her second trey. Levasseur got in the scoring column and Ledgerwood’s third trey made it 13-7 and WHS ended the first quarter up 13-9.
Thorne and freshman Olivia Gilley added the next five Hatchet points, while Levasseur added a bucket to give WHS a 19-9 lead. Thorne and Levasseur and Ledgerwood continued the 13-0 run. WHS would push the lead to 35-9 with just over a minute to go in the half and pushing the run to 22-0 after back-to back buckets from Levasseur, which is how the half would end.
Levasseur would open the third with two more baskets and Ledgerwood would add her fourth triple and a basket to set the IHSAA running clock in motion at 44-9. North Posey got back on the scoreboard with to end the run at 33-0 for WHS. Madi Dalton picked up her first basket of the game, followed by Thorne to make it 52-14. In the fourth Allison Hill and Gilley added baskets to finish the game off at 59-27, while Miles was able to utilize.
Also scoring for WHS was Gilley with four and Hill Dalton with two each. Ashleigh Blankenship led North Posey with eight points.
In the JV contest, Washington posted a 51-17, Kenna Garland led with 12, Hayleigh Cummins had 11 and Lacy Hancock had 10.
WHS travels to Gibson Southern on Saturday and Pike Central for a re-scheduled game on Monday. WHS will host Senior Night on next Wednesday.
