LOOGOOTEE – The Loogootee Lions tennis team set a school record during its 3-2 sectional final win over Northeast Dubois on Thursday at the Rick Graves Tennis Courts. The win not only captured the title and sent the Lions back to Jasper for regional, but also set a school record for wins at 20-1.

“Winning this sectional was no easy feat. Barr-Reeve came into the sectional with a record of 18-0 and Northeast Dubois 16-3. Both teams made us earn the wins on every court,” said LHS coach Mike Tippery.

“Following in the footsteps of a Hall of Fame coach (recently retired coach Rick Graves) is no easy task for both players and coaches. I am really proud of this team because they bought into my coaching style and my emphasis on doing the little things to get better.”

At No. 1 singles, Reece Bauer of Dubois defeated Lion Jordan Wildman, 6-2, 6-2, but LHS took both other singles spots. At No. 2, Jalen Wildman beat Aden Thewes 6-0, 6-0, while Bryant Eckerle defeated Tucker Neukam, 6-3, 6-2 in the third spot.

The schools split doubles, as NED’s Luke Harder and Ethan Ziegler defeated Sebastian Toy and Luke Nonte, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, while the Lion tandem of Jayden Leatherman and Nathan Seals beat Tanner Hurt and Ross Mehringer, 7-5, 6-1.

“We have another tough task next week as we square off against No. 1 14 Jasper in the first round of the Regional. Fortunately, we have Fall Break next week which will help us get extra practice time to prepare,” said Tippery.

Regional team action and individual sectional tourney play continue at Jasper on Tuesday and Wednesday.
