FARMERSBURG – It may be a different year, but the results for the North Daviess football team against North Central (Farmersburg) remains the same.
Class A No. 9 North Central (2-0) used a huge second quarter to defeat the Cougars(1-1) 46-28. Thunderbirds quarterback Dillon Bailey had two rushing and two passing touchdowns.
A gutsy call early on had North Daviess thinking it would be its night. Cougars coach Scotty Helms went for it on fourth-and-four from their own 19-yard-line, and senior tailback Colton Lengacher ran for an 81-yard touchdown to give North Daviess an early 6-0 lead.
The Thunderbirds would score 21 unanswered points on three touchdowns from Bailey – two passing and one running. North Daviess responded with a 47-yard touchdown scamper from the Cougars to cut the lead to 21-12 with 3:26 to play in the second quarter.
Another Bailey touchdown, this time on a 30-yard run gave North Central a 28-12 lead. With less than a minute to play, the Cougars tried to get a score through the air before halftime, but Bailey had other ideas. The Thunderbird quarterback intercepted his counterpart and ran it back for a touchdown as time expired to give North Central a 34-12 lead. When it was finally over, the Thunderbirds outscored the Cougars 28-6 in the second quarter.
"It hurts, any loss is tough," said North Daviess coach Scotty Helms.
Despite running for 188 yards in the first half, but North Central had big play after big play from Bailey. Lengacher ran for 168 yards on 16 carries for two touchdowns, but it hardly mattered.
North Daviess quarterback Brady Helms was 1-for-8 for zero passing yards and the interception, as the Thunderbird defense had a great defensive game plan for a North Daviess offense that scored 30 points in last week’s season opening win at Tecumseh. Bailey only attempted four pass attempts, but completed three passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
The second half didn’t start any better for the Cougars. The North Daviess offense sputtered with a three-and-out, and Bailey ran for a 65-yard touchdown on the first North Central offensive play of the third quarter and the lead was 41-12. The Cougars responded with Lengacher's third touchdown of the night to cut the lead to 41-20 with 3:15 to play in the third quarter. Lengacher found the end zone again as time expired in the third quarter and after Logan Turpin converted the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 41-28 entering the fourth quarter.
"When you get down early like that it’s a difficult thing to overcome," Helms said. "I don’t think I’ve ever been proud of a team I’ve coached."
Bailey responded with his third passing touchdown of the night to Chase VanSchoyk from 40 yards out and the North Central lead was 47-28 with 11:40 to play in regulation. The 47-28 defeat was the North Daviess third straight loss to the Thunderbirds. North Daviess will return home for its home opener against Eastern Greene Friday at Cougar Valley.
