After the 2018 1A state championship run moved the Barr-Reeve Lady Vikings back to 2A, many in Viking Nation probably wondered who Barr-Reeve would have to topple to win a Sectional title. Enter Linton. The Lady Miners traveled to Montgomery for a Thursday night clash, and have claimed two of the last three 2A Sectional crowns.
If Thursday night at Kavanaugh Kourt is any indication, the rest of the 2A tournament opponents would prefer the Vikings drop back to 1A. Barr-Reeve again used an air tight defense and efficient attacking to secure a win to move to 5-0 on the young season.
The opening set saw the Vikings open a 12-7 lead, and then Lexi Traylor went to the service line. The senior rattled off eight straight points, and the Vikes ran to a 20-7 lead. The teams virtually traded points the rest of the set, and Barr-Reeve grabbed the opener 25-13.
The second set witnessed how powerful the Vikings front line could be. Addison Ainscough gave the Vikes an early 6-2 lead with a kill. Shots by Hannah Graber and Anna Ballengee again staked Barr-Reeve to a 20-7 lead, and a Sarah Graber ace ended the set at 25-11.
A trio of Barr-Reeve errors, and a pair of Linton blocks gave the Miners an early 7-5 lead in the third set. After a quick timeout, the Vikings focus improved, and another Sarah Graber ace put the Vikes in front at 19-14. Another Ballengee kill ended the night at 25-18, but Lady Viking coach Amber DeCoursey wanted to see her team finish better.
“We seemed to lose focus a bit at the beginning of the third, but we’re still trying to work people back in to their normal places. We’ll take tonight, and look forward to playing some great competition this weekend,” said DeCoursey.
The Vikings travel to Lafayette Central Catholic on Saturday where they will face many of the top 1A and 2A teams in the state, and will open against 2017-18 2A State Champion Andrean at 10 a.m.
