BICKNELL —North Daviess Lady Cougars basketball team held their own on the road at host North Knox on Tuesday evening, but the Warriors eventually claimed the 37-30 season-opener in the 2019-20 debut for both squads.
The Cougars led just once in the game, making the first shot of the contest, before falling behind 11-9 after one quarter of play. North Knox maintained a 21-16 lead at intermission, and the score was 27-20 heading into the fourth frame as both teams had significant shooting dry spells.
North Daviess was led by junior Mya Knepp; the 5’9” post recorded a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double as ND dominated in the rebounding department but made just 9 of 35 shots and 11 of 20 charity tosses to go with 15 turnovers. Classmate Madde Miller added a half-dozen points and seven caroms. Adrianne Wagler drained a trifecta while Hayley Buehler managed a field goal and Ashley Knepp one free throw. The Lady Warriors were led by sophomore sharpshooter Graycie Poe’s 24 tallies.
In preliminary action, NK routed ND by the final score of 46-9.
ND plays a varsity contest on Friday evening at the Rox Box in Shoals at 6 p.m. and returns on Saturday for a 6 p.m. varsity-only affair versus visiting Lighthouse Christian at the Cougar Den.
